The Doctrine Saves

1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

The "Statement of Faith" or "What we Beleive" statements on most Church web sites or Church charters. rarely conform to the early Church's Doctrine of Christ described by the New Testament.  The Doctrine of Christ is the litmus test of whether you are in the Church of Jesus Christ or a Church that has drifted from the Apostle's teaching.  In writing to the Church, the Apostle John warns them that if they were in fellowship with believers that did not have the Doctrine of Christ, that they were in trouble.  Read what he says.

2 John 1:9-11 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. (10) If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him Godspeed: (11) For he that biddeth him Godspeed is partaker of his evil deeds.

The Doctrine of Christ is identified as 6 foundational conceptual teachings of JESUS that all Churches were to adopt after conversion.  This teaching is repeatedly referred to throughout the New Testament and is specified in Hebrews 6:1-3.

Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, (2) Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (3) And this will we do, if God permit.

Notice that the "doctrine of the Trinity" is not one of the 6 teachings found in the Doctrine of Christ, yet is listed on most Church's web sites in their statement of faith.

For illustration purposes only, the slide below shows the Doctrine of Christ vs. the "7 Sacraments" of the Roman Catholic Church, formalized at the Council of Trent in 1563 AD.
